I'm new to using a GPS reciever. I know that it is reccommended to have my baud rate at 4800 but can i raise it? will it increase response time with GPS satellites? 

You will NOT get better performance by swiching the Baud Rate higher than 4800 because you actually requires less than 300 to 400 characters or byte per 1 second update interval. Hence, 4800 is more than enough.
