Geotagging Guide: Hardware, Software, and Workflow
Geotagging Guide: Hardware, Software, and Workflow Geotag provides information about the position where a photo was taken. Geotag can either be defined manually or automatically with high end digital cameras which has GPS built-in.
Workflow Overview:
- Record your GPS track / travel path
- Include GPS information to your photos
- Share your trips and photos with your friends (see example below).
Basically, there are 2 popular solutions:Solution 1: GPS Data Logger + Digital Camera
- Before taking pictures, make sure date and time in your digital camera are set accurately. If the date / time info are not set accurately, you may manually make adjustment in geotagging software later.
- Record a GPS Track.
- (best approach)Obtain one of our GPS Data Loggers to create a GPS track. A GPS Track contains info about your geographical location of places that you have visited while traveling with a data logger.

- Logging software on mobile phones: GPSed.com
Tips: You may skip step 2 thru 5 if your GPS Data Logger comes with an application to download tracks, import photos, and geotag such as igotU, Qstarz or iBlue Travel Recorder PC Utility. Otherwise, you will need to follow the steps below.
- Export activity to NMEA or GPX or KML format. Tip: Copy this GPS file to the same photo folder you will create in Step 3 below.
- Copy all photos from memory card to a folder in your PC. (Tip: Create your folder by year and Trip name, such as 2008 and then create a subfolder such as "Los Angeles_Winter_Break".)
- [Optional] Make whatever corrections to the photo you needed such as in Adobe Photoshop.
- Geotag the photo using one of the following software:
- (recommended)PhotoMapper: Simple and very easy to use software. It handles gpx, hst, tcx, nmea formats
- Free locr tool(limitation: only accepts NMEA for now, does not accept GPX yet) free locr tool (download here)
- Upload to Google Picasa (recommended) or Flickr Web Album.
OR
Solution 2: Built-in GPS and Camera phone such as AT&T Tilt
-
Record your track with your Camera phone. If you already have a GPS enabled phone, you may download GPSed mobile application (free). If you do not currently have a GPS enabled phone, you will need to purchase one of our Bluetooth GPS receivers to record GPS data on your Bluetooth-enabled phone.
- Before taking pictures, make sure date and time in your digital camera are set accurately. If the date / time info are not set accurately, you may manually make adjustment in geotagging software later.
- Import your existing GPS tracks to GPSed web service or create new tracks with GPSed mobile application. You will need to Sign in to your GPSed account and click on Import Tracks link and upload your GPSed or GPX or KML file.
-
Add geotags to your photos with GPSed Photo Take'n'Pin application. Tip: Right click on a specific photo in GPSed Photo Take 'n' Pin, Get GPS Info, and select For current image or all images.
Pin your photos to a map with GPSed Photo Take'n'Pin (free).
- Preview your geotagged photos in one click in Google Earth precisely at places they were taken.
- [Optional] Upload geotagged photos to Flickr or Picasa and preview them online on Google Maps.
