Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

I purchased the SKU 885 package for my Palm TX recently (TomTom, OnCourse GPS) and when everything is functioning this is a nice package.  However, it is basically useless as it completely locks up the bluetooth function on my Palm TX when the Palm TX powers down or I turn it off while connected to the OnCourse GPS receiver.  I must reset the Palm TX in order to get the bluetooth functioning again.

The problem is that once connected and the two are paired I power down the unit expecting to be able to continue navigating (or at least reconnect and continue) and the bluetooth function on the Palm TX no longer functions.  It will no longer find any nearby devices (the GPS unit or my laptop or other) until I perform a reset.  Then I have to reset my preferences on the Palm TX, start the TomTom software and replan my route.

Does anyone know how to fix this or what device is creating the problem?  Is this a Palm TX problem or an OnCourse GPS problem or a TomTom problem?

I am afraid I am stuck with the software and I will have to return the GPS device and accessories I purchased.  I was told ahead of time from the buy GPS now sales chat that this was the package to buy for my Palm TX and it is obviously useless at this point.  I have been looking forward to have this working with my palm but I guess I will have to buy a standard unit and forget about the Palm TX applications unless someone can fix this problem.Sad

The key is: You MUST exit TT6 everytime before you turn off your TREO. Failure to do this will make TT6 fail to connect to your GPS as it has never gone thru a proper handshake procedures.

    You should use this sequence.

    Startup:
    1) Turn on the Bluetooth GPS
    2) Turn on your Treo and be sure Bluetooth radio is on
    3) Then launch TT6. (IF TT6 is already running at the background, you must EXIT it first and then re-start)

I am assuming the same is true for the Palm TX.  You really should put a statement out about the compatiblity bug with Palm TX.  If I would have known this up front I would have not purchased this.  I don't understand why I wasn't told this up front when I was asking about the compatibility with the Palm TX.

I could name a few dozen scenarios when this procedure is not possible and my only choice is to perform the reset.

What are my options now.  Can I return the software along with the hardware?

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

This problem is only happening to some Palm OS Devices and not to devices running Windows Mobile 2003SE or WM5 or WM6.

Microsoft devices will automatically re-connect / re-establish whenever you turn on your device that has a Navigation software running, such as in this case a TomTom Navigator 5 or 6. Unfortunately, Palm Bluetooth module are not able to do the same like Microsoft devices.

Note: This is not a software or hardware issue as described above. You could return the hardware for a partial refund. Per our return policy, software that has been opened cannot be returned for a refund or store credit or exchange. http://www.buygpsnow.com/ReturnForm.aspx

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

I have a Sprint PPC 6800 Mogul running WM6.  I can only use the OnCourse gps reciever if I reset my device to factory settings.  I can only use it 2 times before the bluetooth stops working with the gps.  I can use all of my other bluetooth connected devices just fine.  Resetting a PPC to it's factory settings just to use the reciever is a big headache.  I use the reciever as an expensive paper weight now.  I think there is a flaw in the way this reciever communicates with bluetooth device.  I only use it when I desperately need to as resetting my device to factory settings is no fun.  Had I known this, I'd kept my money.  Feel sorry for the next guy who purchase this for the pda.

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

We have sold thousands of NAVIBE GB 735 to many WM6 / WM5 phone users and never heard of this issue of needing to hard-reset and have a limit of 2 sessions before needing another hard-reset.

May I first, get your order number?

    GPS Software are you using?

    Outgoing COM Port used?

    Baud rate?

and in External GPS setting page, under Access tab, do you have the checkbox for "Manage GPS automatically..." option check or uncheck?

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

After about 2 1/2 hours of reading other fourms and experimenting, I believe I now have a stable connection with my PPC 6800 without having to do a hard reset.  To make things short, this is what I did:

    1. Go to Settings>Systems>External GPS
    2. Under the "Program" tab set it to None
    3. Under the "Hardware" tab set it to None
    4. Under the "Access" tab make sure there is a check in the box next to "Manage GPS automatically...
    5. Go to Start>Settings>Connections>Bluetooth
    6. Go to the COMM port tab
    7. Delete any COMM ports created by BT GPS V20 connection.
    8. Go to Devices tab
    9. Delete BT GPS V20
    10. Reboot the device.
    11. Go to Start>Settings>Connections>Bluetooth
    12.  Add the BT GPS V20
    13. Go to the COMM port tab
    14. Create a new Outgoing Port (I made mines COM8)
I used Live Search to test.  So far I have been able to connect everytime.  It works with Google maps as well.  Live Search offers speak technology that is why I like it better.  Wish me luck as I hope this is a permment solution and I hope this helps someone else who may be having connection problems.

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

    Thanks but 2 comments/questions:

    1) How did you have an existing pairing that requires you to perform step 7 to delete it first? From a clean setup / configuration point of view, there should not be any COM Port (regardless of Incomming or Outgoing) created automatically.

    2) Also, we always recommend customer to read our Bluetooth pairing guide posted in our Knowledge base and it work 99.9% of the time for our customers:

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

    1) In step 7 I had installed the reciever on my device.  I did not start from a clean setup because I restored my PPC from a backup.  I didn't want to lose my programs and setting.  If this had been done from a clean setup step 7 is not needed.  In my earlier post I had tried installing the device once I recieved it.

    2)  When I purchased my reciever the only thing that came in the box was an explanation as to why it came in a different box and a cd containing instructions for working with WM5 and I have WM6.  Sorry to say, it did me very little good.  Although the platforms are similiar; for my HTC PPC 6800 Mogul the instructions are out dated.  I wasn't even aware that you had a Bluetooth pairing guide posted for my PPC 6800 phone.  When I did a search for PPC 6800, this forum that I am now posting to is what came up.

    3) On a good note, my device is still connecting and working like it should.  I haven't had any problems with it since I set the internal GPS on my phone to none.

Re: Problems with Palm TX Bluetooth and TomTom/OnCourse GPS

    Thanks for the clarification.

All windows mobile 5 or 6 devices use the same OS, hence they will be using the same Bluetooth pairing steps that we have published.

Glad to hear that the GPS is working well. Big Smile
