Holux GPSlim240 not connecting w/ Axim anymore

I just bought the GPSlim240 and finally got it working.  Then it suddenly lost signal and all connections when I tried to use it later in the day.  When I scan com ports in GPSViewer, it no longer finds the GPS device on any ports.

Please let me know the correct way to set it up.  I have tried diff com ports and tried it with manage GPS automatically checked and also unchecked.  I tried the seeings so many times, I am frustrated, especially now with what Com Ports 7 or 8 for incoming or outgoing and what baud rate.

Is there a link to a step by step set up.  It no longer connects via BT although it recognizes the Holux.

    Hi there.

Here is the setup instruction. Please uncheck the "Manage GPS automatically..." checkbox.

You must delete all pairings from your Bluetooth Manager before following the step below:

    http://www.buygpsnow.com/support/issue_view.asp?ID=3038

The correct COM Port = COM 8 and baud rate is 4800 bps.

Re: Holux GPSlim240 not connecting w/ Axim anymore

Thanks.  I found out what my problem was.  Another GPS program StarCaddy switched the protocol to Sirf from NMEA.  I switched it back and GPS was found and worked fine.

I am using iGuidance 4 and just want to make sure what is the best Baud Rate.  GPSlim booklet says 38400.   What is the best baud rate to set on the GPS Viewer program as well as on iGuidance.  It appears at times that the GPS is slow to update my movement, a lot of times I am passed the road and it still shows me not yet to it.

What is the best baud rate to set on all the programs and GPSlim 240?

Technically, 2400 bps is more than enough bandwidth for GPS data per second. So, you may set iGuidance to use 38400 bps but this is actually not necessary.4800 is good enough. The slow update behavior you are seeing is actually normal. With the travel speed of 50 to 70 mph, plus the processing time to (a) process the GPS position data and (b) show the moving map on the device, you are very well already past the actual location.

To reduce this gap, most navigation software such as OCN6, TomTom Navigator 6 and iGuidance 4 have some sort of predictive positioning method, which smartly (may not be 100% accurate), project your future position based on your direction of travel + velocity + speed. Hence, the position gap is greatly reduced. The degree of predictive positioning used in each program may differ.

BTW: You should always look at the TIP / HEAD of the navigation arrow and not the tail.

    Hope this help.

Re: Holux GPSlim240 not connecting w/ Axim anymore

Thanks for the info on baud rate.

    1.   Should I check the WAAS/EGNOS?  Does this help make it more accurate?  Not necessarily for driving but for when I use it as a golf yardage marker?    Would this reduce my location error and make it more accurate, or is it going to make things work less smoothly?

2   Is there any update to iGuidance that would have some type of predictive positioning?

    3.  The driving inaccuracy actually happens around town, when traveling under 35 mph.

    4.  Finally, what does Power Save provide?  It is a check box in GPSViewer.  Does is conserve power on PDA or GPS device?   Are there any drawbacks?

    Thanks again for great support.

    1) Sorry but may I get the name of the application you are using? I do not understand where you were going to "check". Please clarify.

In general, yes, WAAS will improve the GPS accuracy.

    2) Unfortunately not that I am aware of. Feel free to contact iNAVCorp.com if they have any solution on this.

    3) How much of the gap in seconds? For example, when you past a junction / cross road as the starting time vs. when it actually is reflected in the iGuidance moving map?

    4) Ignore Power Save because it is only meant for customs GPS applications that will wake up and record GPS data in certain fix time intervals, vs. once per second update requires by most street navigation software. DO NOT alter this setting or you will risk getting more delays in getting real-time GPS position info.

    1.   The application I had the WAAS check box was GPS Viewer, which cam with the Holux GPSlim240.

    3.  The gap in seconds is approx 5 seconds, which is like 200-300 feet.

Re: Holux GPSlim240 not connecting w/ Axim anymore

    1) Honestly, the checkbox for WAAS in GPS viewer does not work per our tests. It does not actually turn On or Off the WAAS. You will have to use this steps below to turn on WAAS on the Holux GPSlim 240 unit: http://discussion.buygpsnow.com/forums/p/739/2471.aspx#2471

    2) 5 seconds delay in iGuidance 4 seems a bit too long. I would expect 1 to 3 seconds the most. Please turn the unit on, leave it turn on for 72 hrs / overnight, then turn it to OFF, recharge for 2 hours and then re-test. This procedure should reset the Holux GPSlim 240 to factory default settings.

Re: Holux GPSlim240 not connecting w/ Axim anymore

Thanks for your reply.  It started working better, without the long delay.

Unfortunately, one new glitch has occurred.  Now, when I turn on the GPS, it does not get a GPS signal, the red GPS light does not blink.  I tried leaving it on for a day, batteried drained, adn then recharged overnight, but it still has the same problem.  Any suggestions?

What is the name of the program you used to switch the protocol from SiRF to NMEA?
