Garmin Mobile 10 and Dell Axim x50v conflict

HELP! This is going to be long but I am trying to include as much info as possible to solve my problem.

I have been struggling with this G-D gps unit and software for 2 days. Here are the essentials:

    Garmin Mobile 10 gps unit

    Dell Axim x50v with Windows Mobile  2003 , 2nd edition version 4.21.1088

    1 gig sd card

    128MB ROM/ 64 MB RAM

Garmin Mobile XT Software version 4.10.40WP released for download in Oct 2007 and downloaded from Garmin.com. This is not the software that came with the GPS. The original software would not even open Mobile XT- it would just think for ever ( spinning clock)

I have loaded onto the sd card the xt software and maps of the northeast (126 mb worth)-- 811mb free space

After loading and installing the software I performed a soft reset

Before opening Mobile xt I have 39.5 mb of free adjustable storage for programs and storage and 71mb in "built in storage"

I turn on the Mobile 10 gps unit, it blinks fast then one blink every 2 seconds or so. I BEGIN WITH BLUE TOOTH OFF. I then open the Garmin xt program  on the pda leaving me with 32.5 free memory. I get the safety "I won't use while driving" message- I hit "I agree" and then get a welcome message which say to turn on the gps, get a clear view of the sky and that it need to be charged ( which it is); then at the bottom it says "scanning attached" and it begins to load a yellow bar from the left ( about 1/4") then goes blank.

According to Garmin techs the bluetooth will self pair. after a while it states that it cannot find the GPS unit. I can skip the pairing segment and hit "skip" and it will enter the program after i hit "yes" to wanting to skip the scanning/pairing.  If i do that there is a little icon in the upper left corner which has a magnifying glass and a yellow thing like the letter "H". If i click on that a message comes up reading "connection allowed to Garmin GPS device only" and it has three tabs at the bottom 1) Done, 2) GPS info and 3) enable. UNDER GPS info it say it is off with some info of Long and Lat elevation and so on. Under enable it shows a messafe of "searching" and the same Scanning Attachment" bar along the bottom althought the  yellow bar is now 1/2" long. after a few seconds it says it cannot locate the gps device. If i now turn on the BT on the PDA or anytime after opening Mobile XT. I  get a meesage of "BT radio failed to turn on due to insufficient driver memory available. you must perform a normal rest before you can turn BT on"

I then do a soft reset- BT is on, I reopen GARMIN MoBILE XT, I see the logo of the word garmin with the blue triangle and it shut off the program and I am at the start screen.

If i do the BT connection wizard, explore for a device, I can find the GPS 10, touch on it get a service selection option of "com port". click on that,  hit next and a short cut is produced. When i go back to Shortcuts I touch the icon description it says "connect", I hit that and i get it listed on my active connections tab as an outgoing connection of 5 bars but nothing on incoming. if i now go and open Garmin xt, i get a beep and only the logo and back to start page again.

If i then turn off BT but keep it as my shortcut and don't remove it I can open Garmin mobile xt but still get the scanning attached message at the bottom with the 1/4" yellow bar on and off over and over like before.

I have tried device ID on "Pocket PC" and "Dell axim x 50" and i also tried accessibility settings on "allow other devices to connect as "all" and "Paired" and even "other devices can discover me" box checked and when i open Mobile xt it shows the logo and closes again.

Also I put the SD card into my work PDA which does not have BT access( no card or some kind of setting i am not sure) I can load and open XT and it shows the bar on the bottom but says "searching BT" instead of "scanning access"

I hope someone can tell me what it wrong here- is it a bad GPS UNIT? I am really angry and upset because now that i opened the software i can't return this stuff and just buy a "real" GPS. I am giving this to my wife as a Christmas present and she has less patience than I do and i am glad i checked this first.

    Thanks, Currencydog

I think you have manually pair the Garmin GPS with your Axim, which is a common mistake.

You DO NOT need to pair the GPS with Axim first prior to launching the Garmin Mobile XT. If you do, Garmin Mobile XT will not be able to regonize or discover the GPS in nearby vicinity. You should DELETE all pairings from your Bluetooth manager, then try to:

    1) Turn on the GPS receiver

    2) Make sure Bluetooth radio on the Axim is turned on

    3) Launch Garmin Mobile XT (and it will detect the GPS without you pairing it up manually).

Go back and read my message please. If you do you will see it says that if the BT is turned on and then I TRY to open the Garmin Software, it shows me the logo and then instantly turns off.

It shows no paired devices in the BT manager, I have even downloaded and installed the newer version of the Garmin Mobile xt version from them AND i have checked for all application and service utilities from DELL

    This is getting silly now

Ok here is the latest. I have install the newest ROM version A05 from DELL onto the PDA. I have loaded the latest version of garmin Mobile xt for Windows mobile 2003 version 41040w. If i have the BT off it beeps shows me the logo ( the word "garmin" on a black screen with a blue triange on it) and will shut down the program (the original software from the disk just will display the "clock" and not even beep or start). If i have BT "on" the PDA displays a "clock" on the home page and just runs the clock for ever- 10 minutes so far. I have soft reset 3 times, hard reset 3 times- today. I have now taken the Software and loaded onto my XP laptop instead of my vista PC. I have uninstalled anything related to garmin (que, autorun, garmin files) I reinstalled the 41040w software via active sync instead of windows mobile device ( the vista software of active sync) AND GUESS WHAT? IT STILL DOES NOT WORK. WHAT A PIECE OF GARBAGE!!! it beeps shows the logo and turns off. I have adjusted the program and storage capacity in the memory section, up and down and no change- I think I have had enough- I have spent 4 days working on this thing with several calls to garmin and no help from BUYGPSNOW- DEAR SALES TEAM- I WANT MY MONEY BACK- YOU STATE THE SOFTWARE IS NOT RETURNABLE- IT IS TODAY- IT HAS NEVER WORKED I HAVE GONE WELL OUT OF MY WAY TO GET IT TO WORK AND THIS PRODUCT STINKS GIVE ME A RMA BECAUSE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER THIS THING IS BEING RETURNED

RMA approved. Pls return it for a refund.

BTW: Are you able to get WM5 upgrade on your Axim x50v?

We have tested Garmin Mobile XT to work great on Axim x51v (WM5)

Re: Garmin Mobile 10 and Dell Axim x50v conflict

It is easy, i am on WM5 and you are on WM2003SE, which may be an issue. Also, I am not sure if you are using the stock / modified Bluetooth stack / driver, which may also cause problems.

I am sorry but if you have tried the latest version from Garmin website and it still does not work, you may return this product and get OCN6, or iGuidance 4 (software is not refundable), or TomTom 6 (software is not refundable).

I had the exact same problems you mentioned and was finally able to find a solution.  It took about four days and over 2 hrs on the phone with Garmin, but the solution came from googling "xda" "maglite" and "axim"

You have to upgrade from Windows Mobile 2003 SE to at least WM5.  I went ahead and upgraded all the way to WM6 because it was available.  The solution is very tricky but once you get through it, it's well worth it.  It kept me from smashing my X50v up against a wall!

Thank you very much for confirming this. I have actually suggested the same to the customer on Nov 27th (see quote below) but never heard back from him.

Is the WM5 upgrade free to Axim x50v users? If yes, do you have a link to it?
