    Best choice for Palm T|X

I am a Palm T|X user and I am considering purchasing a bluetooth GPS receiver and software for my Palm.

The problem is which software is best at driving directions? Features I want are rerouting, road avoidance, ease of use, voice commands.

I know of the following products but I cannot decide:

    Delorme
    EMTAC
    Tom Tom 5
    Mapopolis

I am leaning towards Delorme but that is only because I have used it in the past on a laptop and it is cheapest but I want the software to be easy to use.  I wish iGuidance was available for the Palm platform.

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

TomTom 5 may not be a good choice as the map data is not the latest, which they have newer maps in TomTom 6.

    1) We have a number of customers using TomTom 6 on their TX. If price is not a concern, you should go with TomTom 6 (met 100% of your requirements). See more details below.

    2) You may also give Mapopolis a try as they offer a 9-day trial on their website at www.mapopolis.com

    3) For EMTAC: It is also a very popular product that met all your requirements except we are not 100% sure if it does support road avoidance feature. We are checking the software now.

    4) DeLorme is the cheapest but we have customers telling us that their map data may not be the most updated one compares to TomTom (TeleAtlans) or Emtac and Mapopolis (NAVTEQ). Also, initial route calculation speed and re-route if you missed a turn is a bit slower than all other softwares in your list.

TomTom 6 compatibility with Palm TX:

TomTom6 is fully compatible but you will have to purchase TomTom 6 along with our pre-loaded SD Card because the TomTom Home PC installation program is not able to regonize the Palm's HotSync program. Due to this, TomTom 6 will not be able to be installed onto your Palm TX.

With our SD storage card, you could install the program by simply plugging it into your device and TomTom would automatically launched.

We recommend the following bundle package for your TX:

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

I also have difficulty to choose btw your TT6+OnCourse and EMTAC bundles. I have several questions:
    1. Which software gets a better feedback from the users? From what I have read, TT6 has lastest updates for data, but some users said it was sluggish with palm TX.
    2. Some users said, you can't use bluetooth GPS with another phone bluetooth at same time(phone call will make GPS reset?). If that is true, can your GPS receiver(OnCourse or EMTAC) also support a serial/wired communication?
    3. I already got a SD card and a card reader, can I load the TT6 to card by myself? Is there an instruction showing how to do this after I purchase the bundle?
    4. Does your bundle or your free Akron mount provide car power charge to both GPS and PDA?
    Thanks a lot.

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

    Thanks for your post.

    1) TT6.

    2) True for some models in the Palm family but does not apply to you because T|X is a handheld and doest not have phone functionality.

    3) Yes. Instruction = http://discussion.buygpsnow.com/forums/thread/3784.aspx (you may need to select the "Palm - Palm OS, ..." on Step 3)

    4) No, only charging for GPS. Please see here:

http://www.buygpsnow.com/add-on-cable-for-charging-treo-650-700w-t5-lifestyle-tx-e2-and-oncourse-sirf-star-iii-or-globalsat-bt-338-bluetooth-gps-receiver-575.aspx and it only works with Globalsat BT-338. So, please consider a bundle package of TT6 or Emtac that has the Globalsat BT-338 Bluetooth GPS receiver included as this add-on cable only works with BT-338 and not others.

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

    Thanks for prompt reply.
    1) TT6 seems a better choice, but is it true that it caused some crashes and slowness with palm TX?
    2) I know TX is not a phone, but when you use another phone+bluetooth earphone(pair 1), some said incoming call can make the bluetooth pair 2(GPS-PDA) reset. Any reports about that? Any GPS receivers support both wired and bluetooth communications?
    3) looks it will work for TX
    4) are you saying that the link you gave is not correctly descriping, that OnCourse SiRF Star III  is not working with this add-on cable? Also, this item is out of stock, is there any other choices for receivers with double charging feature?
Thanks a lot, I think I will make the decision soon and place the order.

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

    1) Most crashes are caused by operator error for not providing the maximum memory reservation for TomTom 6 to run. If you have 8 to 12MB free prior to launching TomTom 6, you will have a slim chance of crashing this program. So, try your best to move all programs / temporary files / mp3 / docs out of the TX main memory and move them or reinstall them into SD card instead to maximize the free up your main memory.

Slow, yes, this is true but it is not "extremely" slow. It is technically slightly slower than previous version 5 it replaces but not so slow to a point it that you cannot use it at all.

    2) Let me try to clarify this. There are two scenariors to this questions.

    a) Making a phone call while TT6 is already running: To make a phone call to a contact stored on your Palm device, you must first switch (not Exit / Quit TomTom 6) to the "Phone Dialing Screen" or any "Voice Dail" software you may have on the Treo 650 / 680 / 700p.

    b) Receicing a phone call while TT6 is already running:

So, only scenarior B fits into the TomTom.com advertised feature (see the statement below) on their product page. Hope this is clear. In scenarior A, you must leave / switch away from TomTom 6 Navigator software before making a phone call. Unfortunately this is a limitation due to the Palm Operating System, not TomTom 6 software. Palm devices can only handle on process at a time. The easy call handling is built into the application meaning if a call comes through, Navigator knows how to handle the call. You will not be able to make a call while the program is running but you can receive them. When a phone call comes in, the voice instructions will mute however you will still be able to see the route instructions to know where you are going.

Source:  http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=286&Category=2&Lid=4 (under Call handling section)

"Easy call handling: On-screen instructions remain visible while making phonecalls or receiving SMS messages. "

    3) Yes, pretty sure and we have help a number of customers setup their Palm TX.

    4) I repeat. SKU 575 for Add on cable for charging Treo 650 / 700w / T5 / LifeStyle / TX / E2 and OnCourse SiRF Star III or Globalsat BT-338 Bluetooth GPS Receiver will only work with either of the following GPS receiver: (All pictures below are clickable and will open up a new window

           <== either one ==>

So, you here is your shopping list:

    a)

     and

    b)

Would this work for charging both OnCourse GPS and Palm TX?
    Thanks.

I'm interested in purchasing a TomTom 6 package for my Palm T|X, but am wondering if there's another recommended package since this particular one is sold out.

That SKU is indeed discontinued about 6 months ago and replaced with OnCourse Edition 3 reciever. Below is the closest match:

Re: Best choice for Palm T|X

I recently purchased the PALM TOMTOM package SKU 885 for my Palm TX and it when it works it does well.  As soon as my Palm TX powers down while connected to the GPS receiver and running TOMTOM it locks up the bluetooth feature on the Palm TX and I must perform a reset to connect again.  Obviously this makes the navigation software completely useless.  I am going to see what my options are but if you haven't purchased this yet steer away from this and the problem may be with the Palm TX in which case you shouldn't even bother with the navigation software for the Palm TX.

Does anyone else out there know anything about this?Sad

Sorry for posting to such a semi-old thread. But this is kinda important. I was about to buy EMTAC software for my Tungsten E2 and TX PDA's before I came accross this post.

1.) Is the TTN6 software compatiable with the holux m1200 reciever?

2.) On the link you posted in the first few reply's, for instructions on installing onto a SD card one already has in posession. The link only states for Treo's and not PDA's. Will TTN work with the E2 and TX (with up to date firmware. Palm OS only)
