How is OCN8 compare to TomTom6 in the US?

September 30, 2008 6:50 PM

SalesTeam said:

@Tyler: OCN 8 comes with many new features that TomTom 6 does not have. In addition, TomTom 6 has a very outdated now, while OCN 8 has the latest Apr 2008 maps.

Here are some of the features that is exclusive to OCN 8:

a) Easy to install: No activation, simply insert the memory card and go!

b) State-of-the-Art 3D technology with graphics of buildings plus road and terrain elevation.

c) Use and manage your POI database, search, save and load your favourite routes.

d) Lane Guidance - Helps you navigate difficult junctions confidently.

and supports Text-to-speech (aka TTS) on devices with 128MB of RAM space.

TTS provides voice prompts such as "Turn right in 500 feets" or "Take the next exit".

OCN 8 will actually speak out the name of the street plus the turn instruction such as "Turn right onto West Broadway in 500 feets" or "Take Exit 5b onto Interstate 10 West".

This helps many, especially to minimize the needs to glance at the screen, instead focus on the roads ahead.

The interface looks similar to the MIO c230 I bought my son, but better.  I'm still prefer of the Mapopolis SW but this seems to be a decent replacement.  I plan to try to on my this on my Dell Axim x30 which is not on the supported devices list but HW wise should work.

This upgrade would be perfect me and my non computer literate wife.  I would love to try it out since I have been a long time GPS user since way back in 2003 with Destinator.

I would really like to see if it has the same "lag" that I have expeienced with OCN 6 as compared to Destinator 3 when coming up on an exit or physically passing a road without passing it on the GPS screen.  It seems the OCN screen always is about a quarter to a half second behind reality.  Maybe it is because I got used to Destinator?  I don't know.

I would really like to acquire the upgrade in order to use all the new features and to see if I can get my wife to use it and feel comfortable with it on her own.  We, as programmers, need to make programs easier to use for the non computer literate making programs that "just work" straight out of the box without any tweaking in order to get the masses to adopt new softwares.
